In the 2026-2027 school year in the Community of Madrid, Kindergarten and Primary began classes on September 7, 2026, and High School, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training on September 8. All these stages end on June 18, 2027. The Christmas holidays run from December 23, 2026, to January 6, 2027, but there is no school on January 7 and 8, so the school year returns on Monday, January 11. Holy Week runs from March 20 to 28, with March 19 and 29 also being no school days.
These are the dates of Order 2034/2026, of May 25, published in the BOCM of June 4, 2026, and of the calendar of the Community of Madrid updated in October 2026. They apply to public and private schools. Below is a table by stages, all the days off remaining until June, the school holidays, and what changes for nurseries, languages, and adults.
When classes begin and end in each stage
The 2026-2027 course began staggered between September 7 and 21 and ends, for almost all stages, on Friday, June 18, 2027. The exceptions are the first cycle of Infantil, which continues until July 30, and the Official Schools of Languages, which end on June 25. These are the dates of the Order 2034/2026 in the BOCM.
| Stage or center | Start of classes | End of classes |
|---|---|---|
| Kindergartens and children's homes (first cycle, 0 to 3 years) | Monday, September 7, 2026 | Friday 30 July 2027 |
| Second cycle of Kindergarten, Primary and Special Education | Monday, September 7, 2026 | Friday, June 18, 2027 |
| ESO, Baccalaureate and Vocational Training | Tuesday, September 8, 2026 | Friday 18 June 2027 (2nd year of High School, according to the university entrance exam) |
| Professional Music and Dance Conservatories | Tuesday, September 8, 2026 | Friday, June 18, 2027 |
| Official Schools of Languages | Tuesday, September 8, 2026 | Friday, June 25, 2027 |
| Art Schools | 9th of september (2.º course) & 21th of september (1.er course) | Friday, June 18, 2027 |
| Higher Artistic Education | Wednesday, September 9, 2026 | Friday, June 18, 2027 |
| Adult Education | Monday, September 21, 2026 | Friday, June 18, 2027 |
For second-grade students enrolled in public preschools or private preschools funded by public funds, the order opens the door to following the long calendar of the first cycle, under the conditions set by the Ministry. If this is the case for you, ask at the school.
End-of-course evaluations in Secondary School
In ESO, the final assessment is generally carried out until June 18, 2027. In Baccalaureate and Vocational Training, the regular final assessment ends on June 10, and from June 10 to June 18 there is time for reinforcement and extraordinary tests for those who have subjects pending, or for formative activities for those who have passed all the subjects. Schools can extend the final assessment in ESO and the extraordinary tests in Baccalaureate and Vocational Training until June 23.
Translation for home: if your 1st year high school student passes everything in the regular exam, from June 11 to 18 he/she will still have activities at the high school. It's not yet a vacation.
Christmas holidays, Holy Week and summer
The Christmas holidays for the 2026-2027 school year in Madrid run from Wednesday, December 23, 2026, to Wednesday, January 6, 2027, both included. The Holy Week holidays run from Saturday, March 20, to Sunday, March 28, 2027. Summer begins on July 1, 2027, except for preschools for children aged 0 to 3 years, where it begins on July 31.
But the holiday dates don't tell the whole story. The order adds non-working days attached to them, which significantly lengthen the breaks:
- Christmas: Thursday 7 and Friday 8 January are non-working days. The children return to school on Monday 11 January 2027. In total, 19 consecutive days without class counting weekends.
- Holy Week: on Friday 19 and Monday 29 March there is no class either. The return is on Tuesday 30 March. It is 11 consecutive days.
In addition, on December 22, 2026 public kindergartens and primary schools can operate a four-hour morning shift if their School Board agrees. Private schools can do the same if the center’s director decides so. Ask your school before arranging pick-up.
Holidays and days off from work remaining until June
Starting at the end of October 2026, these days will be without classes in the schools and institutes of the Community of Madrid, in addition to the holidays. The order distinguishes between holidays and «other non-teaching days,» but for the students' sake, it is the same: there is no class. We must add the local fiestas of each municipality.
| Date | Day | Reason | Bridge |
|---|---|---|---|
| November 2, 2026 | Monday | Festivo | Three-day weekend (Oct 31 to Nov 2) |
| December 7th and 8th, 2026 | Monday and Tuesday | Holidays | Four days (December 5 to 8) |
| 23 Dec 2026 to 6 Jan 2027 | Wednesday to Wednesday | Christmas holidays | United on January 7 and 8 |
| January 7th and 8th, 2027 | Thursday and Friday | No classes | Return on Monday 11th |
| February 12 and 15, 2027 | Friday and Monday | No classes | Four days (February 12 to 15) |
| March 19, 2027 | Friday | No class according to the order; holiday on the updated calendar of the Community | United to Holy Week |
| March 20 to 28, 2027 | Saturday to Sunday | Holy Week holidays | From March 19 to 29 |
| March 29, 2027 | Monday | No class | Return on Tuesday 30th |
The 12th of October 2026, which was also a holiday, has already passed. In the calendar of the Community of Madrid there is no day in April, May or June of 2027 without classes, apart from the local holidays, which each municipality publishes in the BOCM. In Madrid capital and in the rest of the municipalities it is advisable to look them up before planning. You can find them in our Madrid's working schedule.
Kindergartens, with fewer non-teaching days
In the public network’s preschools, in the privately funded ones that are financed with public funds, and in the first grade classrooms of public schools, only January 7 and 8 are non-teaching days. On February 12 and 15, and March 19 and 29, there is preschool. If you have a child in the preschool and another in Primary School, those four days will have different schedules.
The concertos can be performed in one day
Private centers funded with public funds can change one of the «other non-school days» to celebrate the school's patron saint, with the agreement of the School Board and by notifying the Territorial Area Directorate and the families. If your child attends a concerted school, check its calendar: one of the February or March days may have been changed.
How many class days does the course have
With the dates of the order, Primary has 179 school days in the 2026-2027 school year and ESO, 178, before discounting the local holidays of each municipality. This is a calculation based on the calendar: working days between the start and end of classes, less holidays, public holidays and non-school days. The Organic Law of Education requires a minimum of 175 days for compulsory education, as the order itself recalls.
From Monday, October 26, 2026, until June 18, 2027, there are 145 days of class in Primary, again excluding local holidays. If you live in a municipality with a local holiday on a school day, add one for each one.
Intensive period in September and June
Public schools for Kindergarten, Primary and Special Education can operate a four-hour morning shift from September 7 to 30, 2026, and from June 1 to 18, 2027. This does not apply to the first-grade classrooms at those schools. In all cases, the cafeteria must remain open; therefore, if you work in the afternoon, your child can stay for lunch.
In the case of the children's and primary school classes, the intensive day during those dates, and on December 22, depends on what the head of the school decides. The exact schedule for each school is determined by its own organization: ask for it in writing at the beginning of the school year if you need to coordinate work schedules.
How to organize yourself with the days without school
For working parents, the four longest stretches of the course are Christmas (from December 23 to January 10), the February Bridge (from the 12th to the 15th), Holy Week (from March 19 to 29) and the end of June. During these periods there are municipal and private urban camps, and it is advisable to book in advance. You have options in our guide Urban camps and extracurricular activities in Madrid.
A quick checklist for the rest of the course:
- Mark your calendars for January 7 and 8: many people take it for granted that school starts back after Christmas and find themselves with two more days off.
- Ask your school if there will be an early morning class on December 22nd.
- If your child is in a concerted school, confirm if they have moved any non-school days due to the pattern.
- Check the local fiestas of your municipality for 2027 when they are published in the BOCM.
- If you have a student in the 2nd year of Baccalaureate, their final exam depends on the dates of the university entrance exam.
The order states that the calendar can only be modified in exceptional, justified and authorized cases by the Vice-Ministry of Educational Policy and Organization. And it requires each school to display it visibly on its website. If something doesn’t add up, the calendar published by your school is the reference for your case.
