Do you live in Madrid and are you going to move?

You should know that all citizens who are going to live in Madrid for more than six months must register in this city. Requirements to register in Madrid

In Spain, it is compulsory to be registered in the town where you live. The municipal register is a register of people living in that place. Madrid is divided into municipal districts, each of which manages its own urban census.

Who can apply for the empadronamiento in Madrid?

    • The people adults can apply for their own registration or that of their family members, as a couple and children in common.
    • The registration can also be applied for by legal representatives of persons of full age or of those who find themselves legally incapacitated.

There are several different ways to register in Madrid.

Register in person

You should contact any of the Citizen's Advice Bureaux. Madrid Line, but please make an appointment beforehand.

No electronic identification

    • Application for census registration form: shall be sent by post to the registration address within approximately ten days.

With electronic identification

The following are admitted two modalities for electronic identification and signature:

    • DNI or electronic Certificates, which are validated through the state system Cl@ve.
    • Madrid City Council username and password.

Registration by ordinary mail

Documents to prove identity

In the case of Spanish nationals

The following documents must be submitted:

    • Valid ID card or passport for over 14 years of age. The person who goes personally will bring the original and photocopies for the rest of those who are going to register.
    • For the children under 14 years of age, If you are a citizen, you must present the original family book or birth certificate, together with your ID card or passport if you have one.
In the case of foreigners
    • If they are citizens of the European Union or countries such as Norway, Switzerland, Iceland or Liechtenstein, they must present their NIE together with their passport.
    • If they are Romanian nationals and do not present themselves physically, they will have to present their passport.
    • Citizens of other nationalities must present their passport or residence permit, with the original document.
    • In the case of foreign minors born in Spain, up to three months old, the family book or birth certificate must be presented. If they have a passport, also.
    • If they are minors older than three months, the same documents must be presented as for older foreigners.
    • If the minors were not born in Spain, the documents to be presented will be the same as in the case of foreign adults.

When you want to register in Madrid, one of the obligatory documents that must be presented is related to housing.

  • Deed or contract of sale
  • Rental contract in force.
  • Last bill from the landline telephone company, gas, electricity or other supply that has been formalised in the previous year.

Documents to prove representation

In this case, it is necessary to present the written document stating the representation in order to be able to act on behalf of the interested party, with his or her accrediting signature. If both persons are going to be registered at the same address, it would be sufficient to sign the registration form for the person represented and the representative.

If, in addition, there are other persons registered at the address and residing in the dwelling, in addition to these documents, they must provide the document accrediting the occupation of the dwelling and sign the self-certification section of the employer's form.

In the event that the principal is a minor, You must bring the family book or birth certificate and the application for census registration, if you are registering with both parents.
