Because of the traffic jams and pollution levels, it seems that Madrileños choose the car first. Rush hour is a hive of vehicles coming and going through the streets and avenues of the city. It is true that there are other alternatives for travelling such as the metro, the bus or the suburban train... But what about the latest fashion for getting around the city? I'm referring to the very modern bicycles that we see in the city centre. They are called Booster Bike y are electric bicycles that activate an electric motor when pedalling, which is built into the bike.. This way the rider does not have to exert so much effort with his legs.

These bicycles are a fairly fast means of transport, they can reach up to 25 km per hour; they are quiet, environmentally friendly and very healthy for those who use them. I only see advantages: the more we move around by bicycle, the less traffic there will be in the city and the less pollution there will be; so everyone wins.

In Madrid it is now four years since there has been a public electric bicycle rental system. Here they have been christened BiciMad, a play on the name of the city with the word “madness” in English. The aim of this service is to get more and more people to leave their cars parked at home and cycle to work. What do you think of this idea? I'm sure we will feel much better and our legs will thank us for it. Moreover, unlike conventional bicycles, with these the effort is less and we will hardly sweat; so we will arrive in conditions to get to work without anyone calling our attention, you know what I mean!

We summarise the characteristics of this service to which more and more users are joining every day.

WHERE CAN I GET THEM?

The stations where these electric bicycles are available are called totem. There are currently 165 stalls, most of which are located in the centre of Madrid. The City Council, through its website, makes available to users a map of the location of the bike collection points. So, if you live between the Manzanares River and the M30, you can access any of the stations that are enabled. For your information, there are 2,028 electric bicycles with 4,116 anchors where you can pick up and drop off your bike. At the totem you will see a touch screen where you can check the actual availability of bicycles and available anchorages, as well as everything related to your balance or recharge your annual card. This way you can check if there is a free place to leave your bike at your destination. You will also be able to reserve a lock so you will avoid surprises when you want to leave your bike.

At each base you will see lights indicating the availability of the bike.

. If you see that the light is green means that the bike that's docked there is available for you to take with you. Just pull it gently and it's yours.

. Conversely, if the light is red, the anchorage is free and you can leave your bike parked there without any problem. When you leave it, you will then see the light turn green.

. Blue light informs you that the base has already been reserved by someone else.

. And if there is no no light, It's unlucky, because it means that the station is not working for whatever reason.

HOW THEY ARE USED

The first thing to do is to register with the BiciMad service. The process is quick and easy. We have to be clear about whether we want to be regular users or whether we are going to use it only occasionally. In the first case, you have to register as annual subscription. Registration is free, you just need to have a credit card. You can do it in different ways: through the BiciMad mobile app, on the website https://www.bicimad.com/ ,You can call 010, at the BiciMad stations or at the Línea Madrid Citizen Service Offices.

And you can also use these bikes as occasional user. This means that you can use the bike for days. The card can be for 1, 3 or 5 days and you pick it up at the totem pole. You will be billed when you have finished using the service. If you choose any of these options, you should know that when you sign up, a deposit of 150 euros will be held on your credit card and then returned to you.

Once you have your own card, you have to check if the bike is working properly. To do this, look for the ON/OFF button on the handlebars. The blue LIGHT button turns the lights on and off. The green MODE button adjusts the level of electric assistance. The LOW, MED and HIGH positions mean respectively that the selected assistance is low, medium or high. The battery level of the bike is indicated on the right side of the control knob. It is important to know that it is recharged at the same station and that the bikes have a range of up to 70km.

HOW MUCH YOUR SERVICE COSTS

We have already told you that depending on how much you use the bike, you have to get an annual pass or if you are an occasional user, your card will be different. We explain the difference and the prices.

Annual subscription Here you have to charge the card you have applied for a balance for the use of the rental for the whole year. If you have a transport pass from the Regional Consortium of the Community of Madrid it will cost you 15 euros and if you don't have it, 25 euros. Each time you use the bike, the balance decreases depending on how long you have used it. But during that year, you can recharge your card for a minimum amount of 10 euros.

Occasional user The user has to ask at the station for a free card that will allow him/her to pick up a bicycle as many times as he/she wants during the period he/she has contracted, whether it is 1, 3 or 5 days. But you have to take into account that 150€ will be retained in your bank card. This amount will be unblocked once the charge has been made according to the service you have used.

You should know that the rates are 2 euros for the first hour and 4 euros for the second hour.

In both cases there are a number of bonuses:

. If you pick up the bike at a station that has an occupancy of 70%, the bonus will be 0,10€.

. And if you return it on a totem pole with less than 30% of occupancy it will also be from 0.10 euros.

. And finally, there is another benefit, when the anchoring is done at the destination, of 0,10€.

Both the annual season ticket and the occasional card are for personal use and are non-transferable. In both cases the bicycle insurance only covers the season ticket holder. So be careful about carrying passengers on your bike!

GETTING AROUND MADRID

In Madrid we are fortunate that there are several routes to get around by bicycle. We have divided them according to the type of road.

.Bypass. These are perhaps the lanes that have been in operation the longest. It is popularly known as the “green cycling ring” with 64 km of route. On weekends, especially, it is very busy with cyclists of all kinds, from veterans and experts to families with children.

. Urban roads that exist in many districts of Madrid, such as Centro, Arganzuela, Retiro, Salamanca, Chamartín, Chamberí, Ciudad Lineal, Hortaleza, San Blas, Villaverde, Tetuán, Vallecas, Vicálvaro and Barajas.

. Tourist routes. These are the bike lanes that we see in the centre of Madrid. They are aimed above all at tourists who come to the city and want to see the most typical places on a bike. This route includes several points:

- The Paseo de la Castellana-Recoletos and Paseo del Prado axis.

- The Temple of Debod.

- La Puerta de Sol.

- La Casa de Campo.

- The Plaza de Oriente.

- The Salamanca neighbourhood

- The Juan Carlos I Park. This itinerary is the only one located outside the city centre. It is an emblematic park of the city next to the M40, where hundreds of families from Madrid meet every weekend.

RECOMMENDATIONS FOR GETTING AROUND MADRID BY BIKE

Finally, we would like to make a few recommendations when cycling in the capital. Your own safety is at stake.

It is forbidden to cycle on pavements. Always use the carriageway when there are no cycle lanes.

It is not recommended to travel by bicycle with passengers on the back, unless they are minors and with approved seats.

If you are going to carry any luggage, make sure it is not too big so as not to unbalance the bike. Remember that there are small baskets or luggage racks suitable for bikes.

Wear a helmet. You will feel safer when riding in the city.

It is very important to respect the rules of the road, for your safety and the safety of others.

If you are cycling in bad weather, don't forget to double your caution: in rain, wind or snow, the asphalt is much more dangerous.

It is necessary to keep a safe distance from other vehicles on the road. Although we all know that the car is the first to respect this distance so as not to endanger cyclists.

It is important before taking the bike, to make sure that everything is working normally and is in perfect condition.

And although it seems obvious to all drivers, it is important to remember that you should not use your mobile phone while cycling. Any inattention on the phone can cost you a lot of trouble.

These recommendations are addressed to all cyclists. Both for those who ride electric bikes and those who ride conventional bikes.

¿Cómo os movéis por Madrid? ¿Preferís el coche, el transporte público , ir a pie, en moto o en bicicleta?
